Julia, como tantas outras meninas iguais a ela, vive uma existência simples ao lado da família, em uma propriedade rural, um lugarejo bucólico pelos interiores do Brasil. A rotina exige de todos o trabalho rude com a terra, que é também aquele que os sustenta. Única mulher entre os vários irmãos, e com um pai cuja mentalidade não destoava de nenhum outro daqueles tempos, surpreendeu-se certo dia ao saber que iria se casar com João Lino, união determinada pelo pai. João Lino, bem mais velho que ela e sem nenhum atrativo especial, chegando mesmo a causar aversão a Julia, havia sido escolhido pelo pai porque era uma força de trabalho garantida, que só viria a somar às atividades executadas na roça. Desiludida com a notícia, Julia recorre ao noivo, tentando desfazer os planos para o enlace. Mas, entristecida, e com a negativa de João Lino, se vê arrastada para uma vida infeliz ao lado de um homem por quem não sente absolutamente nada. O coração ingênuo de Julia só saberá o que de fato é o amor ao conhecer Abel, moço que, com a ajuda de Januária e Zé Tristeza, chega ao lugarejo e vai trabalhar nas terras de seu pai, e cujo passado está envolto em mistérios.
Que surpresa maravilhosa! Foi meu primeiro contato com o autor e a largada foi ótima.
É um romance atual, porém, com conteúdo antigo. Entenderam? Porque o mundo avança, porém, o machismo e preconceito ainda se fazem presentes.
A história é dividida em duas partes que se ligam: A primeira é o relacionamento de Julia e João Lino e todas as problemáticas de um casamento arranjado. A segunda é a forte mediunidade de Abel e as questões do passado envolvendo ele e sua família.
A parte espiritual fica por conta da maravilhosa Januária, que por diversas vezes, quis sentar com ela e dar uma boa conversada. E também do amigo de Abel, Zé Tristeza, que tem uma história bem peculiar e interessante.
O que mais me chamou a atenção é que o autor foi extremamente prático e eficiente. Escreveu o simples e, ainda assim, passou a mensagem corretamente.
A leitura é leve, fluída e de fácil entendimento. Um capítulo a parte é a diagramação lindíssima.
O livro me deixou bem curiosa para ler mais Roberto de Carvalho.
